RICHMOND, Va. – Led by a trio of players that shot one-over 73, the FGCU men’s golf team resumed its spring season on Monday with a team score of 294 to sit in third place at the Harmony Golf Preserve Intercollegiate hosted by VCU.

The three-day event is the second tournament of the season for the Eagles, who had a month off since their season-opening stay at TPC Sawgrass. FGCU’s 294 is six off the pace of two-under 286 set by host VCU and FAU.

Junior Mathias Boesmans (Belgium/Western Texas College), sophomore Jack Hernandez (Fort Myers, Fla./Bishop Verot HS) and freshman Jesse Lowe all shot one-over par 73s to furnish three of the team’s four counting scores. The trio sits in a tie for ninth overall in the field of 36, while freshman Jake Sherwin’s (Fort Myers, Fla./Evangelical Christian HS) 75 rounded out the counting scores that totaled 294.

“We played just average today, but having Jesse (Lowe) step up the way he did today in his first-ever collegiate tournament was a big help for the team,” said head coach Brent Jensen. “We played solid in spurts, but we need to keep our focus through the duration of the tournament round.”

After coming away with a bogey in two of his first five collegiate holes, Lowe settled down and played the final 13 holes at one-under par. Lowe worked his way back to even-par with back-to-back birdies at No. 11 and No. 12, respectively, en route to a 35 on the back.

Like Lowe, Hernandez’s round featured 13 pars and a pair of birdies, as he was one-under par through 14 holes. Boesman’s 73 featured just two pars over a span of 11 holes through the middle of the round. The Belgium native fired a two-under 34 on the front nine holes and finished with a team-best four birdies on the day.

FGCU will return to the course for the second round on Tuesday with tee times starting at 8:24 a.m.
