JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The FGCU men’s golf team opened its spring championship season in style on Monday with two rounds on the legendary PLAYERS Stadium Course at the TPC at Sawgrass. The Eagles improved by 12 strokes from round one to round two on the 36-hole opening day at the Sea Best Invitational hosted by Jacksonville University and sit in 13th place in the 15-team field.

The Green and Blue opened with a four-man score of 319, but cut that by 12 strokes in the afternoon with a 307. FGCU is 11 strokes back of cracking the top 10 in the field that features a trio of top 50 teams, according to GolfStat’s latest rankings.

Behind a nine-under 279 in round two, No. 26 Tennessee rebounded from a 300 in the morning to hold a six-stroke leading going into Tuesday’s finale. No. 36 Texas A&M (289-296/585) sits in second place followed by No. 46 Coastal Carolina (307-289/596).

Freshman Jake Sherwin (Fort Myers, Fla./Evangelical Christian HS) was FGCU’s low-man in each round, carding back-to-back 77s to sit in a tie for 29th place. Sherwin had seven birdies on the day and gained some momentum going into the afternoon by playing his final 11 holes of the morning at two-under par.

Junior Matt Cote (Palm Harbor, Fla./Palm Harbor University HS) fired the team’s low round of the day with a one-over 73 to close the day. Cote was two-under on the back nine in the afternoon and is tied with freshman Edward Figueroa (Naples, Fla./St. John Neumann HS) for 44th place in the 75-player field.
