KENNESAW, Ga. – A 17-stroke team improvement from the morning to the afternoon round helped the FGCU men’s golf team finish the opening 36-hole day of the Pinetree Intercollegiate hosted by Kennesaw State in a tie for sixth in the 12-team field at Pinetree Country Club on Monday.

Keyed by four counting scores at 76 or lower, the Eagles posted a team score of 295 in day’s second 18 holes after a 312 in the morning. The 607 total is good for a tie for sixth place with fellow Atlantic Sun member Jacksonville and just six strokes out of the top 5.

“We need to work on being more consistent as a team,” said head coach Brent Jensen, who led FGCU to its seventh team title in the last three years in its last outing at the Cobra-PUMA Invitational. “We need to have four guys step up and play well instead of two or three. It’s not about the good rounds, but about how good the bad rounds are that count.”

Host Kennesaw State, who is one of four top 80 ranked teams by Golfstat in the field, leads the field by 12 strokes on the strength of a six-under 282 in round two. The Owls’ five-under 571 is 12 strokes ahead of No. 40 Ball State (294-289/583) in second place.

Coming off medalist honors during the team’s win at the Cobra-PUMA Invitational, freshman Edward Figueroa (Naples, Fla./St. John Neumann) sits in four-way tie for sixth place in the 72-player field. Entering the tournament with a 71.4 stroke average and currently No. 57 in the Golfstat Cup rankings, Figueroa produced back-to-back one-over par 73s, which in the first round was the team’s low score.

Also in the top 100 of the GolfStat Cup rankings at No. 47, junior Matt Cote (Palm Harbor, Fla./Palm Harbor University HS) was solid on the first day with rounds of two-over 74 and 76 to place in the top 20. Junior Mathias Boesmans (Belgium/Western Texas College) produced the biggest turnaround from round one to round two, improving by 11 strokes with a one-under 71 in the afternoon. Boesmans’ 71 was the only under-par round by FGCU and just one of just 13 by the field the entire day. He moved up 28 spots on the leaderboard into a tie for 34th overall (81-71(-1)/153).

Freshman Jake Sherwin (Fort Myers, Fla./Evangelical Christian HS) also produced a double-digit turnaround in the afternoon, rebounding from an 85 with a three-over par 75 counting score. Sophomore Jack Hernandez (Fort Myers, Fla./Bishop Verot HS) turned in one counting score on the day and shot a 79 in the afternoon.

FGCU will return to Pinetree Country Club on Tuesday when it begins the final round on the first tee beginning at 8:38 a.m. The Eagles will play alongside Louisiana Tech and Troy.
