FORT MYERS, Fla. – In the midst of a promising season that has seen the program jump 48 spots so far in the national rankings, the FGCU men’s golf team and head coach Brent Jensen have landed highly-touted incoming freshmen Robert Renner and Anthony Quintessenza during the early signing period.

Both will have four years of eligibility and will join the Eagles, currently ranked in the top-100 nationally, for the 2014-15 season.

Renner – currently a high school senior at Saint Viator in the Chicago suburb of Arlington Heights – is a key addition to a young FGCU squad. In addition to leading his team to a 6th-place finish at the Class 3A IHSA State Finals in Bloomington last October, Renner was named the East Suburban Catholic Conference Player of the Year. His strong play at Saint Viator placed him 5th in the state among all individual golfers at 2-over par.

“I am extremely excited that Robert has chosen FGCU to call home for the next four years,” Jensen said of the Illinois native. “He will bring a lot to the team next year and we are proud to have him join our program.”

Renner’s six high school invitational victories, including his two Chicago District Golf Association Junior Amateur tournament wins in 2012 and 2013, represents a Saint Viator school record for most wins. Renner was able to accomplish feats such as his low-round tournament score of 67 while maintaining his status as an honor roll student.

“He has a lot of really good tournament experience against some of the best players in the Midwest,” Jensen added of Renner. “He will bring a lot of talent and hard work to Florida with him and I expect him to help our team right away. His golf game has been really sharp during his senior year, and I believe he is just coming into his own as a player and will have the ability to develop those skills year round now in Florida.”

Joining Renner on the ’14-’15 roster will be Quintessenza, currently a senior at Northside Christian in St. Petersburg, Fla.

Quintessenza won the district championship in both 2011 and 2012, was selected to the all-county first team each of the past three years and also has garnered all-conference accolades each of the past three seasons, including this past fall campaign.

“I am excited to have Anthony joining our program next season,” Jensen commented. “Like Robert, he has a lot of good tournament experience under his belt, but in the state of Florida which will help our team. He has a simple, repeatable swing which is extremely important in being a consistent player. I look forward to his contributions to our program.”

Beyond his high school competition, Quintessenza has already won a Florida Junior Tour event, something he did last September by beating out 81 others by shooting rounds of 2-under 70 and 3-under 69 at Lake Jovita Golf & Country Club in Dade City. Quintessenza qualified for the Florida Open during the summer between his sophomore and junior years, and also tied for 19th at the Junior Championship during that same summer.

Renner and Quintessenza will be joining a core group of FGCU returners as the program brings back all but one student-athlete as Matt Cote (Palm Harbor, Fla./Palm Harbor University HS) is the lone senior on the current roster.

The team will get its spring season underway in the first week of February in Jacksonville at the Sea Best Seafood Invitational at the legendary PLAYERS Stadium Course at the TPC Sawgrass.
