MACON, Ga. – Following a career-high 30-point performance on Thursday and just missing his fourth career double-double by an assist on Saturday, Brett Comer has earned his second Atlantic Sun Men’s Basketball Player of the Week honor, as announced by league officials Monday.
Comer (Winter Park, Fla./Winter Park HS) posted his record night on 11-17 from the field, including a career-best 4-4 from 3-point range. The junior also issued eight assists against just three turnovers in leading FGCU to a 100-71 win over Jacksonville. Two days later, he added 10 points to go along with those nine assists versus just one turnover to finish with his second-best assist-to-turnover ratio on the year en route to helping guide the Eagles to another blowout victory, this time over UNF by a 73-46 decision.
For the week, Comer averaged 20 points per game, 8.5 assists and 60 percent from the field. Most importantly, he launched FGCU (16-9) back into a first-place tie with Mercer as both clubs are now 10-2 in the league and three games ahead of their nearest competition.
In addition, with his 30 points against the Dolphins, Comer became the third different FGCU player to score at least 30 points in a game this year. Chase Fieler (Parkersburg, W. Va./Parkersburg South HS) tallied 30 opposite Hartford in the season opener, and Bernard Thompson (Conyers, Ga./Rockdale County HS) netted 32 at USF in December.
With his 17 assists in the two games, Comer now sits in fifth place all-time in A-Sun history for career assists with 554. With still all of this season remaining and all of next year, Comer needs only 60 assists to overtake the all-time conference record of 613.
Comer has also improved his scoring by a full six points per game from 8.0 in 2012-13 to 14.0 this year, good for second on the FGCU roster and one of the largest increases in the A-Sun. Furthermore, he needs just 64 points to crack the 1,000-point milestone, which would make him the third different Eagle to achieve that mark this year (Thompson, Fieler).
Both of Comer’s A-Sun Player of the Week awards have occurred this year, with his first coming on Dec. 16 after scoring 18 points on 8-10 from the floor in an easy win over Samford, 83-51. Fieler also won the award in November after his record performance against Hartford.
Comer and his teammates now head out on the road for two crucial games against ETSU (14-11, 7-5 A-Sun) on Thursday, Feb. 13, and USC Upstate (14-11, 7-5 A-Sun) on Saturday, Feb. 15. Both teams – who play each other Monday night – are tied for third place in the league standings, and both contests present potential tie-breaking scenarios for next month’s A-Sun Championship.
