2013 A-Sun Champs to be honored pregame

FORT MYERS, Fla. – After helping guide the FGCU men’s basketball team to the Atlantic Sun Championship and a berth into the NCAA Tournament, seniors Sherwood Brown (Orlando, Fla./Olympia HS) and Eddie Murray (Fort Myers, Fla./Bishop Verot HS) will throw out the first pitch to Saturday afternoon’s spring training contest between the Minnesota Twins and the Pittsburgh Pirates at Hammond Stadium in Fort Myers. Gametime is slated for 1:05 p.m.

The entire FGCU team will be honored prior to Brown and Murray stepping on the mound for the ceremonial first pitch. The Eagles have captured the attention of the nation over the past six days after becoming the first team to punch its ticket to the NCAA Tournament on Saturday, March 9, in just the program’s second year of Division I postseason eligibility.

The Twins have called Fort Myers their spring training home since 1991. To get tickets for Saturday’s game, fans can visit TwinsBaseball.com, call 800-33-TWINS, or go to the Hammond Stadium box office. FGCU students will receive tickets for half-price with their student I.D.

The nation will get a chance to see FGCU react when its first-ever NCAA Tournament opponent and destination is unveiled on Sunday, as CBS will give a live look-in during the team’s Selection Show Party held at Alico Arena.

With a combined 234 games played between them, Brown and Murray have provided the senior leadership for the 24-10 Eagles, who will enter the NCAA Tournament with wins in 12 of their last 14 games.

Playing in its second straight A-Sun championship game in just its second year of Division I postseason eligibility, FGCU put together three straight double figure wins at the A-Sun Tournament as the No. 2 seed, culminating with the win over No. 1 seed and tournament host Mercer in the championship seen on ESPN2.

All second round games of the 2013 NCAA Men’s Basketball Championship are scheduled to be played Thursday-Friday, March 21-22, with third round games held at the same locations on Saturday-Sunday, March 23-24.
