FORT MYERS, Fla. – Both of the FGCU men’s basketball team’s contests against in-state Atlantic Sun rival Stetson will appear on Comcast Sports Southeast (CSS) for the second straight season, as the league office announced the start of its second decade of partnership with CSS on Friday.
FGCU’s two contests are part of an eight-game slate that will be featured as the A-Sun/CSS Friday Night Game of the Week. Last year, all of the A-Sun’s Friday Night Game of the Week broadcasts also aired on ESPN Full Court and ESPN3.com. CSS can be found on channel 70 for Comcast subscribers in Southwest Florida.
The Green and Blue’s Jan. 25th showdown with Stetson at Alico Arena will be the first of the two games between the two clubs on CSS. The Feb. 22nd meeting in DeLand, Fla. at the Edmunds Center will be the second.
“CSS is proud to continue to be the home for A-Sun men’s basketball this season as we enter our 11th year of partnering with the Conference”, says CSS Vice President and General Manager Mark Fuhrman in a statement in the A-Sun’s official release. “CSS is committed to providing our viewers the very best in college sports in the South and the A-Sun helps us achieve that goal.”
“Our partnership with CSS over the last 10 years, particularly with the Friday Night Game of the Week, has enabled us to effectively promote the A Sun brand by showcasing our outstanding conference basketball,” stated A-Sun Commissioner Ted Gumbart. “We are glad to continue this valuable tradition that spotlights the outstanding student-athletes and institutions of the Atlantic Sun.”
The team of Matt Stewart and Sonny Smith returns to handle play-by-play duties and color commentary, respectively, for the Friday night broadcasts. Stewart is in his sixth season calling A-Sun basketball, while Smith returns for his 11th season.
FGCU has taken three of the last four meetings from Stetson over the past two seasons, but the all-time series is tied 5-5. Under the guidance of first-year head coaches, both teams picked up road wins last year in the series.
FGCU returns 85 percent of its scoring, 84 percent of its rebounding and 92 percent of its assists from the 2011-12 squad that won a program Division I record 15 games and advanced to the A-Sun championship as the No. 6 seed under first-year head coach Andy Enfield. The Eagles defeated No. 3 seed USC Upstate and No. 2 seed and host Mercer.
Postseason coverage of the General Shale Brick A-Sun Basketball Championship will include the Men’s and Women’s Semifinals on Friday, March 8. CSS will also carry the women’s basketball title game on March 9.
FGCU season tickets can be purchased in person at the Alico Arena ticket office or by phone at 239-590-7145 or online at www.FGCUATHLETICS.com/tickets. The FGCU ticket office is open from 9 a.m. – 5 p.m. from Monday through Friday.
Combined season tickets for both the men’s and women’s teams are also available again for a 50 percent discount. Season tickets for either the men’s and women’s program range from $99-$279. A combined season ticket (both teams) ranges from $149-$419.
