FORT MYERS, Fla. – FGCU men’s basketball freshman Bernard Thompson (Conyers, Ga./Rockdale County HS) closed the regular season with his third and fourth straight double figure outings, earning his second and the final Atlantic Sun Newcomer of the Week award, announced by the league office late Sunday night.
Thompson and USC Upstate’s Ty Greene are the only A-Sun rookies to win the award twice this season.
A native of Conyers, Ga., Thompson averaged 17 points and 6.5 rebounds over a two-game road swing to close out the regular season. His weekend began with his second 20-point outing of the season, going for 20 points on the strength of 4-of-5 from long range and five rebounds. Thompson capped the trip with team-highs of 14 points and eight rebounds, including four offensive, at ETSU.
Thompson ranks second on the team and among A-Sun freshman in scoring at 11.9 points per game, while leading the conference rookies in rebounds (5.2) and steals (1.9). Over the 29-game regular season, he produced a team-best 21 double figure games, leading the team in scoring and rebound on 10 occasions, including both in the same game four times. Thompson also ranks ninth in the A-Sun in three-point percentage (.388) to go along with being 15th in scoring, 16th in rebounding and third in steals.
FGCU (13-16, 8-10) earned the No. 6 seed in this week’s Atlantic Sun Tournament held on the campus of Mercer in Macon, Ga. The Eagles will take on third-seeded USC Upstate (20-11, 13-5) in the quarterfinal round on Thursday, Mar. 1, at 8:30 p.m. The game can be heard live on ESPN 770AM in Fort Myers with David Moulton and Mark Miller on the call.
