FORT MYERS, Fla. – After averaging 15.5 points and 5.5 rebounds over two games, FGCU freshman Bernard Thompson (Conyers, Ga./Rockdale County HS) was named the Atlantic Sun Newcomer of the Week on Tuesday, announced by the league office.
Thompson is the second FGCU freshman to earn the accolade this season, joining point guard Brett Comer (Winter Park, Fla./Winter Park HS) who received the honor on Nov. 22. Prior to last night’s game at Mercer, Thompson was named the A-Sun Player of the Week by College Sports Madness.
A native of Conyers, Ga., Thompson began the seven-day stretch with 15 points and a season-high nine rebounds during the Green and Blue’s 84-72 non-conference win over Maine on Dec. 29. Thompson’s 15 points came on a pair of three-pointers and a 7-for-9 performance at the line. Last night at Mercer, he finished in double figures for a team-best 10th time this season, scoring a team-high 13 points.
With 10 starts in 13 games to his credit, Thompson leads all A-Sun freshmen in scoring at 11.8 points per game, ranking 10th overall. The 6-foot-3 guard has used his long frame to come up with 25 steals, good for a 1.9 per game average that is second in the A-Sun. His 25 steals have been highlighted by 10 multi-steal efforts and a current streak of 11 games with a theft. Thompson is also adding 4.6 rebounds and 2.1 assists per game while shooting 44 percent from the floor.
Thompson is part of a four-member freshmen class for FGCU that makes up three of the team’s top five scorers, good for 47 percent of the team’s points.
FGCU will wrap-up a two-game A-Sun swing through Thompson’s home state of Georgia on Wednesday night when it takes on Kennesaw State. Gametime at the KSU Convocation Center is slated for 7 p.m.
