AT A GLANCE
After opening its season on the road for the ninth straight year, FGCU returns to the friendly confines of Alico Arena for its home opener and first-ever regular season meeting against nearby Ave Maria on Monday night. The game will also be the home debut of first-year head coach ANDY ENFIELD. FGCU came up just short in the last minute on its opener at TCU on Friday evening, dropping a heartbreaking 73-72 decision to Mountain West member and future Big XII foe TCU. The Eagles are 7-2 all-time in home openers at Alico Arena and 6-3 in home openers in general. The first-ever men's basketball game was played at then-Teco Arena in 2002, which was considered the home opener that season.

ALL-TIME SERIES
The only meeting between FGCU and Ave Maria came at the start of the 2008-09 season, which was an exhibition contest for the Eagles. FGCU defeated the Gyrenes 89-58 in front of a crowd of 1,500 fans on Nov. 5, 2008, at Alico Arena. The game was first of the Eagles' second season in Division I and the first contest in Ave Maria men's basketball history.

NEW COACH, NEW HOPES
On March 31st, the FGCU men’s basketball program got a new look for its 10th season in program history when ANDY ENFIELD was named head coach. Enfield, who spent the previous five years as an assistant with Florida State, is the second head coach in FGCU’s brief history. While at FSU, Enfield was a part of two teams that advanced to the NCAA Sweet Sixteen and back-to-back clubs that lead the NCAA in defensive field goal percentage.

D-1 TESTED & NOW APPROVED
On August 12, 2011, all 14 of FGCU’s Division I sports became postseason eligible when the NCAA Division I Board of Directors approved the recommendation from the NCAA Division I Administration Cabinet to elect FGCU to Division I active membership. FGCU began its transition into Division I in 2007-08. The Eagles are now eligible for Atlantic Sun postseason play and NCAA Tournament.

SCOUTING THE GYRENES
A member of The Sun Conference, Ave Maria is led by third-year head coach Jamon Copeland. The Sun Conference sports the nation's No. 1 team in the NAIA Division II Preseason Coaches' Poll in Northwood University. Northwood took down Atlantic 10 member Fordham in an exhibition contest before falling just short, 89-84, at ACC foe Maryland. Ave Maria sports a 1-2 record on the young season after opening with a 103-58 victory against Trinity College and two losses by a combined 10 points at the Point University Classic. Junior Dylan Fugate leads four players who average double figures at 17.7 points per game. Fugate has reached double-digits in all three games and is also second on the team in rebounding (6.7). Sophomore guard Matt Chattin averages 14.3 points and has a team-high six three-pointers. As a team, Ave Maria is shooting nearly 50 percent (99-199) from the field and holds a +12.7 rebound margin. The Gyrenes have won 30 games over the last two seasons.
