FORT MYERS, Fla., - Kevin Martin, a 2005 graduate of Florida Gulf Coast University, signed a pro contract with Porto Ferpinta in Portugal. They were runner-up in the UZO Liga after a seven game series in the league play-offs in 2008 and have appeared in the finals seven times in the last 12 seasons.
Martin, a native of Maplewood, New Jersey, also had a try-out with the New Jersey Nets earlier this summer. Since graduating from FGCU, Martin has played professionally for the last three seasons with various teams. Martin recently played for the Xion Dukes in Austria.
Martin was the first FGCU player to sign with a professional team following the 2005 season. Martin played just one season at FGCU, but set a season record for blocks in a season with 38. He helped lead FGCU to its first NCAA Division II Tournament and a 24-7 record. He averaged 11.7 points and 5.0 rebounds per game while shooting over %55 from the floor.
The Eagles will host Ave Maria in an exhibition on November 5, in Alico Arena.
