FORT MYERS, Fla., - The Florida Gulf Coast University men’s basketball team starts a three game road trip in Macon, Georgia this Thursday night where they will be facing the Mercer Bears. The Eagles are 9-16 overall and 5-6 in Atlantic Sun Conference play after a three point win over University of South Carolina Upstate Sunday afternoon. The Eagles will be looking for retribution Thursday night against the Bears after suffering a loss to Mercer earlier in conference play at Alico Arena. Mercer is currently 10-14 overall and 5-6 in conference play.
The Bears ended a four game losing streak this past Saturday with a close win over Campbell University, who the Eagles also got the best of earlier this season. Mercer’s high powered offense is lead in scoring by guard James Florence who is averaging 18.8 points per game and forward Shaddean Aaron who is averaging 16.4 points per game.
The Eagles are lead in scoring by senior Casey Wohlleb with 15.9 points per game, which also ranks as the eighth best individual scoring average in the Atlantic Sun Conference. Casey Wohlleb has scored 970 career points while playing at FGCU which places him third on the all time career scoring list and he has the chance to become the University’s second career 1,000 point scorer.
Over the last eight games, senior guard Yavney Neptune is shooting .678 from the floor, going 19-for-28. Neptune is averaging 5.25 points per game during that span and is knocking down %75.0 from downtown. Neptune has also made three starts during that span as well.
Thursday’s game should prove to be a fast paced, quick scoring contest since both teams like to play an up tempo style. Both the Eagles and the Bears are looking to win their second straight game and improve to five hundred in conference play.
The game can be seen live on Asun.TV. Monthly subscriptions are $9.95 and individual games can be purchased for $5.95. The Eagles follow up their game at Mercer with a trip to Kennesaw State on Saturday.
