FORT MYERS, Fla., - The FGCU men’s basketball team plays its much awaited Atlantic Sun Conference home opener on Friday night. The game will be televised by Comcast Sports Southeast and is the Atlantic Sun game of the week. FGCU (5-10, 1-1 A-Sun) will take on a Stetson team with an identical record overall and in league play at 7:30 pm in Alico Arena on Friday night.
The Eagles and Hatters will face each other for the first time on Friday. The two teams had nearly identical weekends during the opening week of conference action as both won at UNF and fell at Jacksonville. The Hatters fell in triple-overtime to JU last Thursday while FGCU fell 74-55. The Eagles knocked off UNF 70-67 while the Hatters needed overtime to escape with a win.
The game is being billed as one of the biggest sporting events hosted by FGCU, as it is the first game televised live from Alico Arena. Beasley Broadcasting is sponsoring ‘Beasley Buck Night’ where all tickets and concessions will be sold for $1. Fans are encouraged to wear blue as part of a ‘blue out’ as well.
FGCU is looking for its second straight home win and third in the last four games. Casey Wohlleb (Boca Raton, Fla.) has led the team in scoring in each of the last four games and is averaging 19.0 points per game over that stretch and has climbed to 12th in the league in scoring.
Stetson, who is also looking for their third win in the last four games, comes into the game with the same 5-10, 1-1 A-Sun record. Junior Garfield Blair is averaging 26.0 points per game in league play thus far and leads the team at 15.5 points per game on the season. He is also shooting .814 from the charity stripe, knocking down 79-of-97 from the line.
