NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Sophomore Martin Smith poured in a career-high 30 points and freshman Stephen Hurt added 20, as Lipscomb defeated FGCU for the second time this season, 84-74, on Saturday night at Allen Arena.
Now in second place in the Atlantic Sun standings at 11-4, the loss snaps the Green and Blue’s program Division I record seven-game win streak and slips them to 19-9 overall. The Bisons improved to 10-15 with the win and 5-9 in the A-Sun.
Smith and Hurt combined for 33 of the team’s 54 points in the second half, putting FGCU’s streak of seven straight halves with allowing 30 points or less to rest. Smith’s 30 points came on 9-of-13 from the field and 11-of-14 from free throw line. Hurt’s 20 points came in a foul-plagued 23 minutes, while both had 10 rebounds.
Sophomore Bernard Thompson’s (Conyers, Ga./Rockdale County HS) fifth 20-point performance on the road this season led the way for the Eagles, as he poured in 23 points on 10-of-17 from the field to go along with seven boards. Senior Sherwood Brown (Orlando, Fla./Olympia HS) finished a rebound shy of his fifth double-double in A-Sun action with 17 points and nine boards.
Leading by one possession (70-67) with 2:47 to play, Lipscomb took control of the game with a crucial 7-0 run that absorbed the next 2:01 en route to the season sweep of the Eagles. The Bisons scored 54 points in the second half, hitting on 17-of-28 from the field and 17-of-21 from the charity stripe.
Junior Chase Fieler (Parkersburg, W. Va./Parkersburg South HS) reached double figures with 12 points, while sophomore Brett Comer (Winter Park, Fla./Winter Park HS) equaled a career-high with 12 assists, including four alley-oops. Comer has now passed out double-digit assists five times this season.
In a game that featured eight ties and seven lead changes, the two teams were whistled for 24 fouls apiece. FGCU suffered its first loss when shooting 50 percent (29-58) or better from the field while Lipscomb produced a 45 percent clip (28-62). The Bisons shot 22-of-31 from the free throw line compared to an 11-of-21 performance by the Eagles.
FGCU raced out to a 12-0 lead less than three minutes into the game, converting of five of its six opening possessions. Thompson and Fieler accounted for all 12 points and both had highlight-reel alley oops during the run from Comer. The duo went 5-of-6 from the field during the spurt, while Lipscomb missed its first five shots.
As fast at the Green and Blue started the game, Lipscomb was able to erase the 16-7 FGCU lead with a 9-0 run for the first tie of the game. FGCU never trailed over the opening 20 minutes and took a 34-30 into the locker room at the half thanks to 13 points from Thompson.
The Green and Blue built the lead up to six on a trio of occasions in the opening three minutes in the second half, but the game saw the score tied seven times before Lipscomb took the lead for good with 5:33 remaining.
FGCU will have six days to prepare for its lone game of next weekend when it travels up the state to take on Stetson on Friday, Feb. 22. The game will be televised on Comcast Sports Southeast (CSS) starting at 7 p.m.
