AT A GLANCE
FGCU will look to build off of the most historic win in the program's brief history when it hosts Ave Maria on Thursday night at Alico Arena. The Eagles opened their home schedule in style two nights ago with a 63-51 win over ACC member and in-state foe Miami in front of a school record 4,552 fans. A member of the Sun Confer¬ence, Ave Maria is off to 3-0 start with wins over Edward Waters (Fla.), DeVry University and Montreat College (N.C.) by an average of 23.7 points per game.
SIGNATURE WIN
Behind a 40-14 edge in points in the paint and a 21-3 game-changing run in the middle of the first half, FGCU erased an early 10-point deficit en route to a 63-51 win over Miami. • The win was the Eagles' first over an ACC school, as the Hurricanes received nine votes in the most recent Associated Press Top 25 poll. • FGCU made its living in the paint, attacking the taller Miami lineup to the tune of 40 points inside on a series of layups and six total dunks. Making his debut in front of the FGCU faithful, sophomore ERIC MCKNIGHT had team-highs of 14 points and eight rebounds, out-dueling Miami center Reggie Johnson, who went 2-for-8 from the field for six points. • Joining McKnight in double figures was senior SHERWOOD BROWN and sophomore BERNARD THOMPSON, who had 14 and 13 points, respectively. Brown finished 7-of-15 from the field and paired his 14 points with seven rebounds, while Thompson had nine of his 13 in the second half and had a game-high four steals.
ALL-TIME SERIES
FGCU has taken both meetings in the series, including a 79-64 win last year at Alico Arena on Nov. 14. Brett Comer scored 15 second half points and Sherwood Brown chipped in 19 points off the bench in the last year's victory. The only other meeting came on Nov. 5, 2008, when FGCU defeated the Gyrenes, 89-58, in an exhibition game.
