FORT MYERS, Fla. – The FGCU men’s basketball trio of senior Sherwood Brown (Orlando, Fla./Olympia HS) and sophomores Bernard Thompson (Conyers, Ga./Rockdale County HS) and Eric McKnight (Raleigh, N.C./Princeton Day Academy/Iowa State) all earned A-Sun Preseason accolades from College Sports Madness on Saturday when the media outlet unveiled its All-Conference teams.

Brown, a second team honoree by College Sports Madness, was named an A-Sun Preseason All-Conference choice by the league head coaches last Thursday and was also recognized by Lindy’s Sports Magazine during its A-Sun preview. The third team preseason honor is the first this fall for Thompson, who was a CollegeInsider.com Mid-Major Freshman All-American last year. A transfer from Iowa State, the 6-foot-9 McKnight was also named to the third team and will take the court for first time as an Eagle on Nov. 9 when FGCU opens at VCU.

As a team, FGCU was predicted to finish third in the A-Sun standings by the league head coaches, Lindy’s Sports, Athlons Sports and Blue Ribbon. The Eagles highest preseason ranking came from YAHOO! Sports, which predicted the Green and Blue to finish second.

Last season as an A-Sun All-Conference second team and All-Tournament team choice, Brown became just the third player in program history to lead the team in scoring (12.8) and rebounding (5.9), figures that both ranked ninth in the A-Sun. He finished in doubles figures in 20 of 28 games played, highlighted by a team-best four 20-point outings. Brown’s 5.9 rebounds per game were bolstered by a team-high 54 on the offensive glass, as he displayed his versatility by leading the squad in scoring and rebounding in the same game seven times.

Thompson was a unanimous choice to the A-Sun All-Freshmen team a year ago, ranking just behind Brown in scoring (11.5) and rebounding (5.1), figures that ranked 15th and 16th in the A-Sun, respectively. A two-time A-Sun Newcomer of the Week, Thompson also ranked third in the A-Sun with 57 steals. He finished in double figures a team-high 22 times, leading the team in scoring 10 times, highlighted by road performances of 22 points at Kennesaw State and 20 points at USC Upstate.

McKnight’s 7-foot-2 wingspan will add a new element to the guard-deep FGCU squad. A native of Raleigh, N.C., McKnight sat out the 2011-12 season due to NCAA Division I four-year transfer rules and will have three years of eligibility. A former Princeton Day Academy standout that earned a 91 rating from ESPN.com coming out of high school, McKnight saw time in 14 games as a freshman at Iowa State in 2010-11.
