Men’s Basketball Picked Third in Atlantic Sun Preseason Poll
FORT MYERS, Fla. – Coming off an appearance in the Atlantic Sun Championship game a year ago, the FGCU men’s basketball team was picked third in the 10-team league in both the coaches and media preseason polls, announced by the league on Thursday afternoon.
Sitting behind preseason favorite Mercer and USC Upstate, the Eagles garnered three first place votes in the media poll, while senior Sherwood Brown (Orlando, Fla./Olympia HS) was named to the Preseason A-Sun All-Conference team. A 2012 A-Sun All-Conference second team and All-Tournament team member, Brown and Preseason Player of the Year Torrey Craig from USC Upstate were the only two players in the A-Sun in 2011-12 to rank in the top 10 in both scoring and rebounding.
“We’re really excited about the progress we’ve made over the last year,” said head coach Andy Enfield. “The guys have worked hard to improve as individuals, but have also come together to build a team. It should be exciting season and we are looking forward to getting started.”
The third place prediction is the highest-ever for the Eagles, who enter their sixth season in the A-Sun and Division I ranks. Led by then first-year coach Enfield, FGCU became just the sixth team in the 33-year history of the A-Sun Tournament in 2012 to advance to the title game in its first try.
With eight returning letterwinners, including all five starters, FGCU brings back 85 percent of its scoring, 84 percent of its rebounding and 92 percent of its assists from the 2011-12 squad that won a program Division I record 15 games.
Brown along with forward Eddie Murray (North Fort Myers, Fla./Bishop Verot HS) make up the seniors on FGCU’s roster. Last season, Brown became just the third player in program history to lead the team in scoring (12.8) and rebounding (5.9), figures that both ranked ninth in the A-Sun. He finished in doubles figures in 20 of 28 games played, highlighted by a team-best four 20-point outings. Brown’s 5.9 rebounds per game were bolstered by a team-high 54 on the offensive glass, as he displayed his versatility by leading the squad in scoring and rebounding in the same game seven times.
