Varidel Set For 2010 U-20 European Championship

FORT MYERS, Fla. – FGCU men’s basketball incoming freshman Christophe Varidel will continue to gain valuable experience on the international scene this month, as he begins play for Switzerland at the 2010 U-20 European Men’s Basketball Championship on Wednesday, July 14 in Austria.

Varidel, who signed with the Eagles and head coach Dave Balza in May, brings valuable experience to the Swiss roster after leading the team in scoring at 19.3 points per game and to a 4-3 record at last year’s U-20 European Championships.

Switzerland will open preliminary round play against Finland on Wednesday, July 14, followed by a showdown against Portugal on July 16 and the final game of group play against Bulgaria on July 18. The Swiss are participating in Division B of the Championship and are in Group B. Game-by-game results of the entire European Championship can be followed on www.Fiba.com.

During the 2009 U-20 Euro Championship, Varidel led the Swiss in scoring in six of seven games, highlighted by 33 points against Hungary in the opening game of the preliminary round. Varidel reached double figure points six times, including 20 or more on a trio of occasions. Varidel knocked down 54 percent of his shots from the field, 37 percent (19-51) from three-point range and 80 percent (24-30) from the charity stripe.

Varidel played at Worcester Academy (Mass.) in 2009-10, turning in a senior campaign in which he averaged 17.6 points, 3.1 rebounds and 2.4 assists. Varidel excelled from long range, leading the team with 68 three-pointers and a 41 percent clip from deep. A native of Versoix, Switzerland, Varidel was 20th-ranked prospect in Massachusetts by the New England Recruiting Report.
