Thursday, February 18, 2010

FORT MYERS, Fla. – Freshman Sherwood Brown had a career high 15 points but it wasn’t enough as the FGCU men’s basketball team fell to a hot-shooting Lipscomb squad by a score of 93-75, Thursday night at Alico Arena.

Brown (Orlando, Fla.), along with junior Reed Baker (Naples, Fla.) teamed up to lead the Eagles (7-20, 4-14 A-Sun) offensively as Baker had 18 points on 7-of-15 shooting. For the Bisons (14-12, 11-6 Sun), Josh Slater narrowly missed a triple-double as he notched 19 points, 11 assists, and nine rebounds.

Lipscomb got off to a blistering start as they opening the game on an 11-0 run in the first 3:29. The Bisons didn’t miss a shot during the run, shooting 4-of-4 from the field and 2-of-2 from the charity stripe.

The Eagles bounced back and used a 10-0 run of their own to pull even with Lipscomb at 20 apiece with 8:54 to play in the half. Once again, Lipscomb went on a hot streak, scoring nine straight points to take a 29-20 lead (6:48 remaining). The Bisons would end the half on a 7-2 run and take a 42-30 lead into the intermission.

Lipscomb would begin to pull away early in the second half, using an 8-2 run that included six points from Adnan Hodzic to take a 50-32 lead 2:29 into the period. The Eagles scored the next six points, all on lay-ups, to cut the deficit to 50-38 with 15:54 left in the game.

Josh Slater’s dunk put the Bisons up 60-42 with 13:03 to play, and a triple from Jordan Burgason extended the lead to 20 (65-45) with 11:15 left. But with 9:22 remaining, Jordan Burgason hit another three-pointer to extend the Bisons lead to 74-48. Though the Eagles went on a 27-19 run following Burgason’s triple, the deficit was too much to overcome as Lipscomb would go on to win, 93-75.

The Eagles are back in action Saturday night as part of another FGCU hoops doubleheader this Saturday against the Belmont Bruins. The men tip-off at 5:15 p.m. and the women will also battle the Bruins 30 minutes following the conclusion of the men’s contest.
