FORT MYERS, Fla. – The Florida Gulf Coast University men’s basketball team travels to Farmville, Virginia to face Longwood University at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 5. Both teams are looking for their first win as FGCU enters the game 0-5 and Longwood sits 0-8 on the season.

FGCU in December

• FGCU has an all-time record of 35-18 in games played in the month of December.

Traveling Blues

• The Eagles finished last season with a 0-14 record away from the friendly confines of Alico Arena. FGCU has lost 23 straight on the road.

• The last time FGCU won on the road was back on Jan. 26, 2008 at Gardner-Webb, when the Eagles won 87-80. Chad Lutkenhaus was the only current Eagle that played in that game.

 

Scoring Big

• A player standing no taller than 5-foot-9 leads the Eagles in scoring. Sophomore guard Reggie Chambers leads the Eagles attack, averaging 11.0 points per game. Chambers has posted double-figures in three of the Eagles five games, including a 20 point performance against Prairie View A&M on Nov. 19, 2009.

• He sits 21st in the A-Sun in scoring, and second on the team with 11 assists.

 

Three Is the Key

• The Eagles have struggled from behind the arc this season, shooting just 24.3 percent (18-74) from downtown.

• Four of the Eagles five losses occurred when the opponent collected more three’s FGCU.   

• Opponents are shooting 34.2 percent (39-114) from behind the arc, including Miami’s 13 three-pointers against the Eagles on Nov. 25, 2009.

 • Against Bethune-Cookman, five of the Wildcats three’s in the game came in the second half.

 

Young Guns

• The Eagles six newcomers are responsible for 42.6 percent of FGCU’s scoring.

• Leading the way is freshman Anthony Banks, Banks recorded double-figures against No. 2 Michigan State, Miami and Bethune-Cookman. His 10.2 points per game lands him second on the team and in the top 25 in the A-Sun.

• Freshman Hunter Miller leads the team in assists with 15. Miller is averaging 3.0 assists per game, and recorded a season-best six assists against SMU on Nov. 21, 2009.

• Sherwood Brown and Charlie Lytle have combined for 40 total points. Brown scored a season-high eight points against Miami on Nov. 25, 2009. Lytle is averaging 3.6 points per game and has played in 118 minutes, more than any other newcomer. Lytle’s five blocks leads the team and his 12 defensive boards lands him third on the team.

 

FGCU Block Party

• Last season, senior Kyle Marks finished second in the A-Sun with 1.65 blocks per game. His 51 blocks led the team, and set an FGCU single season record.

• This season, Lytle sits atop the FGCU leader board as Marks three blocks land him second on the team. This time last season, Marks had four blocks as the Eagles were 1-4 with a win over North Carolina Central.

 

It Takes a Thief

• FGCU’s 238 steals last season came in big part from senior forward Derrick O’Neil. O’Neil lead the way with 48 steals on the season, collecting a season-best six steals against Jacksonville on Feb. 21, 2009.

• This season, FGCU has recorded 28 steals. Chad Lutkenhaus leads the team with six steals.  

• This time last season, the Eagles had 32 steals.

 

Where is FGCU in the A-Sun

• The Eagles rank second in field goal percentage defense, sixth in rebounding, seventh in blocked shots, eighth in scoring and ninth in scoring defense.

 

Road Warriors

• 16 of FGCU’s 29 games this season will be played on the road. The Eagles faced the 2009 NCAA runner-up Michigan State as part of a four game road trip that took them through three different states to start the 2009-10 season. The Eagles made non-conference road trips to Texas and Miami, and will travel to Virginia, South Carolina, and North Carolina in December.

About The Lancers

Longwood University dropped an 84-65 road decision at the College of William and Mary on December 2nd in Williamsburg, Va.

Longwood completed a season-opening stretch of eight games in 19 days at William and Mary, including seven contests away from home.

Mike Gillian is in his seventh year at Longwood University, having been named the school's seventh men’s basketball head coach on May 2, 2003.

Coach Gillian’s six-year overall record at Longwood is 51-130, including an overall home court record of 37-37 in Willett Hall; the program is 34-17 at home over the past four years.

Gillian was named the 2009 Independents Coach of the Year by CollegeInsider.com. 

Longwood completed 2008-09 with a final record of 17-14 overall, its highest win total since beginning Division I scheduling in 2004-05, and the most wins for the program overall since 2000-01.  The Lancers had an impressive home record of 13-2, its best since 1993-94, and the +8 turnaround tied for 18th-best in Division I.  The 17 wins also tied for the ninth-most in the 33-year history of the program.

The Lancers are led by senior wingman Dana Smith who is averaging 14.6 points and 6.6 rebounds a game. Smith has started every game this season.

Longwood also receives solid minutes from sophomore guard Antwan Carter who averages 15.9 points and 6.5 rebounds per game, and is shooting 50% beyond the arc coming off the bench.

• FGCU owns a 1-0 record in the all-time series against Longwood.

• The Eagles trailed at the half, 29-28 but scored 47 second half points to defeat the Lancers 75-58 at Alico Arena on Mar. 4, 2004.

• That victory marked the Eagles 21st win of the 2003-04 season, and their 15th straight win at Alico Arena that season.

• FGCU dominated the glass, outrebounding the Lancers 43-29

• Three Eagles recorded double-figures as FGCU went 17-33 (51.5 percent) from the field in the second half.

• In the game, the Eagles went 22-29 (75.9) from the charity stripe.
