Eagles Knock Off Johnson & Wales, 65-46
FORT MYERS, Fla. - The FGCU men's basketball team picked up their second straight win Sunday evening, defeating Johnson & Wales University by a score of 65-46 at Alico Arena. Derrick O’Neil led FGCU in points, rebounds, and assists, and the Eagles forced 26 turnovers in the victory.
The Eagles came out and dominated the game's opening minutes, running out to a 13-0 lead six minutes into the contest. FGCU held the Wildcats scoreless until a jumper from Stephen Nosworthy got Johnson & Wales on the scoreboard 6:06 into the game. Two Delvin Franklin three-pointers would give the Eagles their largest lead of the half, 19-3, with 12:53 left in the first half. Another Nosworthy jumper brought the Wildcats to within 8 at 25-17, but the Eagles would end the half on a 6-0 run to end the half with a 31-17 lead.
In the second half, the Eagles continued to maintain a double-digit lead throughout. A layup from Jarrod Johnson cut the lead to 12 with 13:13 to play, but that was as close as Johnson & Wales would get. FGCU continued their solid defensive play throughout, holding the Wildcats to just 29.8% shooting on the day, leading to the 19 point victory.
For the Wildcats (4-9), Stephen Nosworthy scored a game-high 20 points, including 10-11 from the free throw line, and added 7 rebounds. AJ Coppola chipped in with 12 points, including 3-7 from behind the three-point line.
For the Eagles (4-6), Derrick O’Neil recorded a team-high 14 points in addition to pulling down a team-high 7 boards and dishing out a game-high 5 assists. Addison Smith contributed 11 points and grabbed 5 rebounds. Delvin Franklin reached double-figures as well, scoring 11 points.
The Eagles will hit the road for their next two games, traveling north to take on Butler and Michigan. The Eagles will first travel to Indianapolis, Indiana, to take on Butler University on Saturday, December 20th, at 2:00 PM. Then FGCU will head to Ann Arbor, Michigan, to take on the University of Michigan on Monday, December 22nd, at 7:00 PM. The Eagles will be back to Alico Arena on Tuesday, December 30th, as part of an Eagle hoops doubleheader. The women's team will be in action against Cornell at 5:00 PM, with the men's game against Army set for 7:00 PM.
