Men's Hoops Fall to Mercer
FORT MYERS, Fla., - Mercer’s James Florence led a Mercer offensive attack that scored 99 points on FGCU on Thursday night, establishing a new high for an opponent to score on the Eagles. Mercer handed FGCU its third straight loss with their 99-77 win, improving to 8-9, 3-1 A-Sun while the Eagles fall to 5-12 and 1-3 in the A-Sun.
Florence led all scorers with 34 points while adding eight assists as Mercer scored 59 points in the second half, going 12-for-16 from downtown in the second half. Shaddean Aaron added 25 points on 10-of-15 shooting. Calvin Henry added a double-double with 14 points and 10 boards while adding four blocks.
Senior forward Casey Wohlleb (Boca Raton, Fla.) led the Eagles with 25 points, while junior Landon Adler (Decatur, Ind.) stepped up in the absence of Adam Liddell scoring 11 points, pulling down eight rebounds and adding three blocks. Junior Delvin Franklin (Houston, Texas) chipped in 15 points and was 4-of-7 from behind the arc.
The Bears went on a 6-0 run capped by Brian Pfohl’s layup with 10:25 left to take a 21-13 lead. But FGCU would cut the lead to 26-21 with a Landon Adler dunk off a missed layup by Delvin Franklin at 6:14. A long range three-pointer by Shaddean Aaron would give Mercer a 31-21 lead with 5:39 to play.
With seconds left in the half, after stripping the ball of senior Rob Quaintance, Calvin Henry drove the length of the court and slammed the ball home to give the Bears a 40-31 halftime lead.
FGCU was able to trim Mercer’s lead to 69-60 after a triple by Wohlleb with 6:47 to play, and were able to keep within striking distance until an 8-0 run from 3:49 to the 1:57 mark gave the Bears a 90-70 lead.
For the game, Mercer shot 52.7% from the field including 57.7% from 3-point land. The Eagles only shot 35.9% from the field and 32.4% from behind the arc.
The Eagles will be in action again Friday night at Alico Arena when they battle another Atlantic Sun opponent in Kennesaw State at 7:15 P.M. directly following the women’s game between the Eagles and Kennesaw.
