Men's Hoops Drop A-Sun Home Opener

FORT MYERS, Fla., - The Florida Gulf Coast University men’s basketball team fell to Stetson 70-62 on Friday night. A record 4,216 fans dressed in blue, packed into Alico Arena for the school’s first ever Atlantic Sun home game. The Eagles also made their first ever appearance in front of a TV audience at home. With the setback, the Eagles fall to 5-11 (1-2 A-Sun) while the Hatters moved to 6-10 (2-1 A-Sun).

Stetson sophomore A.J. Smith led all scorers with 18 points while adding five rebounds.

Seniors Rob Quaintance (Glendale, Ariz.) and Casey Wohlleb (Boca Raton, Fla.) led the way for the Eagles scoring 17 apiece. Quaintance was 5-8 from behind the arc, while Wohlleb was a perfect 7-for-7 from the charity strip. Senior Adam Liddell (Auburn, Ind.) chipped in 10 points for the Eagles.

The Hatters went on a 7-0 run midway through the first half when junior Tim Lang hit the 3-point jumper to take a 22-15 advantage. The Stetson lead would only go as high 8 before the Eagles went on a 6-0 run capped by a Liddell jump with a minute and half left in the opening frame. The score looked to be tied going into the half before A.J. Smith hit a buzzer beating jumper in the paint to give the Hatters a 32-30 halftime advantage.

The Eagles tied the score at 32 seconds into period when senior Terike Barrowes (Pompano Beach, Fla.) threw a lob pass to Adam Liddell who slammed it home. The Hatters would go on a 12-0 run to a 44-32 lead. During the run, the Eagles were 0-for-9 from the field.

The near-sellout crowd stayed behind its team as the Eagles chipped away at a 12 point deficit. The crowd roared when Rob Quaintance hit a long distance 3-pointer to knot the score at 55 with just under 4 minutes to play in the game. Junior Garfield Blair capped a 5-0 run for Stetson with his 3-point play and the Hatters never looked back and won by a final score of 70-62.

The 17 points for senior Rob Quaintance is a career high.

The Eagles will be in action Thursday night when they faceoff against A-Sun foe Mercer at 7:00 P.M. at Alico Arena.
