Men's Basketball Adds Michigan Transfer
FORT, MYERS, Fla. – Florida Gulf Coast University men’s basketball coach Dave Balza announced that Reed Baker will transfer to FGCU this season.
“I am thrilled to bring in someone as talented as Reed to our program,” said Balza. “We have been pursuing Reed for a long time. He was a tremendous high school player at one of the top programs in Bishop Verot and we are excited to bring him back home to finish out his playing career. In addition to being an asset on the floor, he comes from a tremendous family, and is an excellent student and future leader of this team.”
Baker averaged over 2.5 points per game as a freshman at Michigan, making two starts while appearing in 28 games. Last season, the Wolverines finished 22-13 and advanced to the National Invitational Tournament (NIT). In his first career start against Army, Baker finished with 19 points including five three-point field goals to go with four rebounds. Baker was named ESPN-Plus Player of the game for his efforts against Navy. Reed sas also named ESPN-Plus Player of the game following a road win at Northwestern after scoring 11 points including three treys. Baker made 17 three-point field goals as a freshman and shot 80% from the free-throw line.
“I am very excited to be part of the FGCU family,” said Baker. “It is great to come back home and continue to do what I love with a great group of coaches and players at FGCU. This is a tremendous opportunity for me and I am looking forward to getting started and help the program in anyway I can.”
While at Verot, Baker received numerous honors during his career. He was named Southwest Florida Association of Basketball Coaches Mr. Basketball in 2006. He was also a First Team All-State (3A) selection by the Florida Sports Writers Association. He is the career leader in scoring and assists at Verot. He averaged 20.1 points, 5.1 rebounds and 4.8 assists for his career at Bishop Verot.
“After all he has been through in the recruiting it was important to be at home and be around people he trusts," said Bishop Verot head coach Matt Herting. “Reed has known coach Balza from his high school days and feels very comfortable around him. I feel it is important for him to go where he only has to worry about playing basketball. His return is also huge for basketball in the area. People in area got a chance to watch him on TV last year, and now get a chance to watch him back home. Not only was Reed one of the best players ever to come out of our area but he is also a tremendous person.”
Baker becomes the fourth player to sign with FGCU this season as he joins incoming freshman Justin Stokes and Ed Rolax as well as junior college transfer Delvin Franklin. FGCU will join NCAA Division I and the Atlantic Sun Conference this season. For information on becoming a member of the Eagle Booster Club and season ticket holder, call 239-590-7017.
