Men's Hoop Falls to BYU-Hawaii
LAIE, Hawaii – The Brigham Young University-Hawaii men's basketball team defeated Florida Gulf Coast University, 82-74, behind Austin Smylie's 24 points on Monday night. The Seasiders, now 8-7 for the season, opened up a 40-30 halftime lead as Smylie netted half his points before the break and never trailed in the second half despite several runs by the visiting Eagles.
BYU-Hawaii trailed 11-10 early in the first half but a Smylie lay-up gave the Seasiders the lead and they increased it to as many as 14 before settling for the ten-point halftime cushion. The Seasiders pushed the lead to as many as 15 early in the second half but the Eagles clawed their way back into the game and cut the deficit to three with just over four minutes to play. A pair of Smylie free throws and a three-pointer by Eric Boyce, who leads the nation in three-point percentage, increased the margin to eight and Boyce sealed the win by hitting five of six free throws in the final minute.
Smylie, who is among the national leaders in field goal percentage, connected on nine of 13 from the field and three of five from the three-point line. He also grabbed seven rebounds, handed out four assists, made two steals, and blocked a shot. He played 34 minutes without a turnover as well. Boyce chipped in with 13 points and was 2-4 from long range. Danny Jackson played an outstanding game for the Seasiders as well, connecting on all five of his field goal attempts, including one three-pointer, for 11 points. Jackson also matched his career highs with seven rebounds and two blocked shots. Paul Peterson dished out four assists and plucked off five steals to go with his eight points for BYU-Hawaii while Jason Solis came off the bench for nine points and three assists. Vaughn Schouten matched Smylie and Jackson with seven rebounds and dropped in six points in the win.
Junior guard Beau Bauer led Florida Gulf Coast with 19 points, including four three-pointers. Sophomore forward Casey Wohlleb added 15 points and senior forward Marcus Watts chipped in 14 for the Eagles, who are now 10-9 for the season.
