West Georgia Upends Men's Basketball

CARROLLTON, GA – Chris Burras scored a career-high 26 points and West Georgia made 14 3-pointers to defeat Florida Gulf Coast 90-71 in NCAA Division II South Region men’s basketball action Monday night.

Burras connected on 10-of-14 from the floor, including 6-of-9 from beyond the 3-point line, to lead West Georgia (15-5). Michael Ford added 22 points on 8-of-16 shooting, including four 3-pointers as the Braves hit 14-of-29 (48.3%) from 3-point territory and made 47.8% from the floor in the game.

Freshman guard Cecil Avant, playing his second game after becoming eligible at the start of the semester, scored 24 points and added seven assists to lead the Eagles (10-11). Sophomore guard Yavney Neptune added 14 points while sophomore forward Brendan Rooney had 12 points. Sophomore center Roman Narmbaye posted career-highs with eight points and 12 rebounds.

West Georgia broke open a 24-24 game with 6:40 to play in the first half with a 10-2 run over the next 2:47. The Braves scored 32 points in the final 10 minutes of the half to lead 47-36 at the half.

The Eagles were down by eight points, 57-49, after a driving lay-up by Yavney Neptune with 12:35 remaining to play. But Burras and Ford keyed a 16-6 run over the next five minutes that pushed the Braves lead to 18 points at 73-55 and put the game out of reach.

FGCU closes out its five-game road trip on Thursday at Palm Beach Atlantic. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m.
