FORT MYERS, Fla. – With the help of timely hitting and solid pitching, the No. 26 FGCU baseball team was able to win the season series over Atlantic Sun Conference opponent Lipscomb, with a 4-3 victory Saturday afternoon at Swanson Stadium.
The Eagles improve to 18-6 on the year and 4-2 in A-Sun play while the Bisons drop to 10-19 and 2-4 in conference action. FGCU takes the season series 2-1.
The Green and Blue wasted no time getting the lead in the bottom of the first. Freshman lead-off hitter Tyler Selesky (Estero, Fla./Estero HS) started with a single down the left field line. Senior Mike Reeves (Peterborough, Ontario/St. Peter’s Secondary) immediately bunted him over with a sacrifice bunt back to the pitcher. With Selesky on second, junior Sean Dwyer (Taveras, Fla./Taveras HS) laced a triple to left center, scoring Selesky. With Dwyer on third, junior Brandon Bednar (Stuart, Fla./South fork HS) singled to left field on the first pitch he saw to give the Eagles a 2-0 advantage after the first.
FGCU would add another in the third when Dwyer lead off with a double to right center. Dwyer would advance to third on a single through the left side by Bednar and later score on a sacrifice fly-out by redshirt senior Brooks Beisner (Punta Gorda, Fla./Charlotte HS/Auburn), to give the Green and Blue an early 3-0 lead.
The Eagles added their fourth and final run of the game in the bottom half of the sixth. Selesky started the frame with a double to right field and advanced to third on a wild pitch. Reeves would knock Selesky in with a single to left field and give FGCU a 4-0 advantage.
Lipscomb didn’t get their bats going until the top of the seventh. Tyson Ashcraft would lead off with a single followed by a walk to Noah Chandler to put runners on first and second and no outs. Griffin Moore would come up and was hit by a pitch to load the bases for Lipscomb with no outs. Senior reliever R.J. Brown (Brandon, Fla./Bloomingdale HS) would get the next two hitters to strike out and fly out back-to-back. With two outs in the inning, Drew Adams would clear the bases with a three-RBI triple down the right field line and cut the lead to 4-3. Junior closer Harrison Cooney (Vero Beach, Fla./Vero Beach HS) would come in relief for Brown and strand the tying run on third.
Down 4-3 going into the ninth, Lipscomb would try to mount a comeback against Cooney. Chandler and Moore would go down quick in the ninth with a ground out and a strike out back-to-back. With two outs, Chad Shannon would double to right center to start the rally. Lee Wilson would then pinch hit and reached base on a hit by pitch. With runners on first and second, Cooney would hit the next batter to load the bases. Taylor Stewart would then come up with the bases loaded and the tying run on third and strike out swinging on three pitches to end the game.
Freshman Michael Murray (West Palm Beach, Fla./Forest Hill HS) started for the Eagles and picked up his third victory on the season. Murray allowed five hits and fanned five through six scoreless innings of work. Brown would come in for Murray in the seventh and record only two outs, while giving up three runs on two hits. Cooney finished the game, picking up his fourth save this season. The Vero Beach, Fla. native allowed only one hit and struck out three in 2.1 innings pitched.
The offense was bolstered by lead-off hitter Selesky, who went a perfect 3-for-3 with two runs scored. Dwyer and Bednar would also provide some much needed offense, recording two hits and a RBI apiece. Reeves and freshman Nick Rivera (Cape Coral, Fla./Bishop Verot HS) also collected hits in the victory. Reeves as well as Beisner picked up a RBI in the 4-3 win.
For the series, Selesky and Reeves led the charge, each batting .455 (5-for-11) with a pair of doubles. Selesky added four runs scored while Reeves collected a RBI and two runs scored. Dwyer put together a nice series, with a .333 batting average (3-for-9) with a double, triple and a team-high three RBI.
The Eagles will now hit the road for a five-game road trip. The Green and Blue will start in Tallahassee, Fla. when they take on No. 4 Florida State in a two-game, mid-week tilt Tuesday and Wednesday. Both games are scheduled to start at 6 p.m. FGCU will then make their way to Kennesaw, Ga. to face A-Sun opponent Kennesaw State in a three-game series beginning Friday night at 6 p.m.
